Good to know about Masai Mara: It is a big nature reserve in southwestern Kenya that is the continuation of the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. Masai Mara is named after the Masai people (the indigenous people in the area) and they once described their land, while looking from a far distance, as: “Maa” (Masai language) which represents “Mara” and means “Spot”. It is a compelling description of trees, shrubs, savannah and cloud shadows that marked the area of never ending steppes.
Laikipia: This spectacular region is considered to be the gateway to Kenya’s wild, northern border country. Wild and sparsely populated, Laikipia is covered by large privately owned ranches. In most ranches the land is divided with free-flowing animals. In recent years, these wildlife has become a valuable asset.
Travel Ethics: In Masai Mara and Laikipia, water is a short supply, so use it sparingly. Masais are a proud people’s team, always ask before photographing. Bring small banknotes in local currency to shop for local crafts outside the villages. Shake hands with those you meet – a courtesy code here.
Mobile network and email: Email and internet access are available at the hotel. The mobile network works well.
Visa: Passports are required in all destinations outside the Nordic region. Passport must be valid 6 months after departure. The lodge is doing a lot for its environment. There is an ongoing tree project were you as a guest is able to plant your own tree. This is profitable for both the lodge and for schools located within Laikipa area.
All cottages at Loisaba lodge are built with local materials. Kiboko & Koija Starbeds are built on top of four poles to reduce environmental impact. This place is able to accommodate a small number of 8 people, just to make sure we’ll leave the smallest footprint possible behind.
All waste water goes through a septic tank and end up in a soak pit. Laundry and kitchen water is also recycled through a soak pit. Drinking water is stored and served in recycled glass bottles. Non-organic waste from Loisaba and Kiboko and Koija Starbeds are taken care of to make sure nothing will be left behind.
Waste oil from paraffin lamps are packed in big storage drums and later transported to Nairobi for further sorting.
The noise from the generator is counteracted by a muffler and placed in a bunker to reduce noise. There is a battery inverter system which stores energy when the generator is running and reduces its active time which is limited to 6 hours per day. Outdoor lightning run by sensors. A storage room for fruits and vegetable has been built of charcoal.
Solar panels are the primary power provider at both lodges camp as well as paraffin lamps.
Rainwater is stored in a reservoir. All showers at Kiboko Starbeds are constructed with buckets with a max. limit of 20L/per shower and the water comes from a nearby, natural water source. You will be given an information sheet concerning how you can consume as little water as possible during your stay.
Some of the vegetables served at the lodges are grown at the camp. Others are bought from local farmers which provide both job opportunities and a stronger community.
You will automatically be a part of a stronger community by visiting Lakipia. Interacting with tourists will give a wider perspective on life. You will also be able to do a village tour during your stay which will give you an opportunity to interact with locals from the area and learn more about their life and culture.
Each staff member are offered an online course as well as a CPR course.
Corporate Social Responsibility is a social project run by the lodge itself. It provides the community safety through continuous patrol of rangers and guards.
Loisaba Community Trust offer constant support to the people of Laikipia. This project sponsor – for example – school fees for 2 highschool students and 4 collage students as well as 5 teacher’s salary each month.
All staff members working at the lodge are under good working conditions. Food is provided daily, transport to and from nearest town twice a week, medical costs and health clinic visits are also covered.
