Sustainable ecotourism is of utmost importance at Mowani Camp.

Conservation:
Mowani Camp has recently established cooperation with the Integrated Rural Development and Nature Conservation (IRDNC), AfriCat, Elephant Human Relations Aid (EHRA) and Section Uibasen (Twyfelfontein) Conservation to increase conservation operations in Damaraland.
One supports a lion project in the desert where Mowani and Kipwe pay the salary for one of the two rangers. A number of local native plants have been planted and replanted around the lodge and the waterhole. The water hole has been extended to provide a local elephant soil of 18 elephants (including 2 calves under 6 months old) enough water when visiting the lodge.

Local Society:
This project includes the Winter Knights and Medic Rush. The elders in a tribe as well as children are given blankets and doctors and nurses are given transport to and from Damaraland to provide medical support to the society.
Every quarter a football tournament is held where alcohol abuse is discussed.

Mowani assists local farms by restoring water holes that has been damaged by elephants. They also provide local farmers with waste vegetable which is great food for pigs.

They also give the local community opportunity to develop skills on how to manage a garden. This includes budgeting, sustainability and plant succession.

Recycling and reuse using: All waste is recycled and sent to Windhoek, located more than 400 km from the lodge.

Staff Development:
Mowani currently has an assistant coach and main guide. They started working at the lodge 13 years ago as a craftsmen and waiter. Recently, 8 staff members have been trained at supervisor level.

Sustainable kitchen garden:
Mowani has started its own herb garden maintained by the chefs. In this garden Mowani grows a variety of vegetables which are being used in the kitchen after each harvest.

Local suppliers:
Mowani buy most of their vegetables from Dimab, a community based vegetable garden that assists local people to lead the project successfully.

Electricity:
Mowani uses water heaters run by gas and low energy lamps. The lodge has been designed with a high ceiling and ventilation ducts which result in a temperature change from the inside and outside of no more than 5 degrees during hot days.
