Sample Itinerary
You will arrive in Windhoek, the capital city of Namibia. One night will be spent here at Belvedere Boutique Hotel.
Time to pick up your rental car and start your drive to NamibRand – a great award winning conservation area south of Windhoek. In NamibRand people are working on conservation projects of various kinds as well as protecting the environment. You will enjoy the Wolvedans area and experience the Wolvedans Dunes Camp – a down-to-earth, stylish place. It has an unrivalled natural charm that suits the adventurous traveler. The camp is located on the edge of a 250 meter high sand dune in a completely untouched environment.
You will stay here for two nights. If you are interested you are able to go on a game drive in one of the camp’s Landrovers. If you plan to do an afternoon trip you’ll most likely end it while watching the sun set over spectacular dunes, a memorable experience!
You also get the opportunity to do a “Bushman Walk” where you follow tracks from the previous night, small desert creatures that you meet along the way, are identified and explained by your guide.
We also recommend you to do a Sustainability tour where you get the chance to learn more about what sustainable tourism mean in practice – get a better understanding of what is being done in this part of the world.
Your next adventure is awaiting you. Time to drive to the start of the Toktokkie hike. You will experience the famous Toktokkie trail – a three days walk in the desert with two nights spent under the stars – simple luxury and a great experience for both body and soul.
You will start off with an easy walk by 2pm.
Fill your water bottles and pack your backpack with the personal items you want to bring on the walk. Your luggage is transferred to the camp by car. The walk begin with a visit to Namib Desert Environmental Education Trust (NaDEET), a non-profit organization aimed at developing environmentally responsible citizens in Namibia. A short scenic walk will take you to the starting point for the Tok Tokkie Trail. The first hike will take you down a slope with mysterious “fairy circles”, across rolling dunes until you reach the first camp of your hike.
The dunes are not as massive as in Sossusvlei, but these little dunes consist a unique beauty.
At the camp, relax and embrace the magnificent landscape. Get to know the desert before your dinner is served. The first night in the desert is for most people unforgettable.
Hiking: about 2 hours
Early morning tea or coffee will be served before the sunrise, followed by a light breakfast so you can take off before the sun gets too hot. The highlights of today’s hike are the breathtaking views of the dunes and plains as well as seeing the desert awakening. You will be able to feel, smell, taste and experience the oldest desert alive, in the world.
With some luck and the guide’s trained eye, you’ll be able to find some of the desert specialties such as golden clouds, dancing white dust, barking geckos, sand larks, to mention a few. You will climb a mountain before descending to a dry river bed. During the day your guide will explain some wonders of Namib to you – how the fascinating desert flora survives, how insects and reptiles adapt to the harsh environment and how mammals can survive here without water. The bird life is surprisingly good and you may be lucky enough to see one of the Namib endemics, Klitlark. Bigger animals you can encounter are bat-eared fox, oryx, springbok and ostrich. When you realize that our survival depends on access to water, our admiration for the plants and animals in the desert increases.
We will take a break in a shady place and the cooks will prepare us lunch. There is plenty of time to relax, take a siesta and reflect on everything you’ve experienced. As the heat decreases, you start walking back over the dunes to your second overnight destination. The view in front of you is a sea of endless dunes.
Hiking hours
Morning: 4 – 4.5 hours Afternoon: 2 – 2.5 hours
The shadows on the dunes create a constantly changing palette of colors just before sunset. A sundowner and a delicious dinner after a long and enjoyable day are welcomed. You might be able to hear gecko and owls in the background. If not, embrace the complete silence of the desert.
Once again you will wake up just before sunrise. Coffee and breakfast will be served before your hike of the day through the dune
fields begin. The soft and rolling dunes are dotted with chamomile trees, which provide a welcome shadow for rest. Today’s walk is easy and you will arrive at Tok Tokkie farmhouse around 11.30am – a visit to the Namib Educational Trust can be done as an ending of your trip.
Hiking hours
Morning: 3 – 3.5 hours Afternoon: 0 hours.
Time to hit the road again. Leave the desert behind and meet the ocean in Walvis Bay. You will drive to Swakopmund where you will check in at the Swakopmund Plaza Hotel.
Experience the scenic distinct German architecture, the remains of a former era that has been preserved. Most of the city’s sights are easy to find so use the morning to stroll and explore Swakopmund town.
Drive down to Walvis Bay Lagoon, located 30 km south of Swakopmund, this protected lagoon is one of the most valuable wetlands along the west coast of Africa. This sanctuary is a phenomenal spectacle, often inhabited by more than 150,000 birds.
Check out, return your car by 5pm. Depart from Swakopmund back to your home town or continue down south to Cape Town for further adventures.

Wolwedans has recently received the highest rating in the 2018 Eco Awards of Namibia. The prize is one of the highest acknowledgments in Namibia’s tourism industry. Since its inception 15 years ago, Wolwedans has been ruled by an approach with regard to People, Planet and Profit. From the very beginning, the commercial purpose of the business has been to ensure that NamibRand’s nature reserve is economically feasible while maintaining NamibRand for future generations.
Wolwedans is the founder of the Global Ecosphere Retreats, an initiative run by the Zeitz Foundation. Among other things, they run the NamibRand nature reserve whose biodiversity and habitats are effectively managed through active monitoring and innovative methods. Here you find reproductive projects of cheetahs and leopards. Team of females are helped to start a sustainable Village Laundry business to reduce the use of natural resources and energy in Wolwedans. The project also creates well needed job opportunities. It also offers Wolwedans Desert Academy and the Namibian Institute of Culinary Education which is a cooking school for young Namibians who provide a career in the hotel and tourism industry.
Thank you for choosing sustainable tourism!
