Sustainability at Bird Island:
Bird Island Lodge is proud to be an environmentally and socially responsible tourism operation. In this closed island environment, one is basically responsible for protecting, preserving and improving Bird Island and its surrounding reefs and water through sustainable management practices.

Eco-design:
All buildings at this particular hotel were built using local products as far as possible (Seychelles does not have a large manufacturing industry and needs to import many goods) as well as local labor. All rooms has been built surrounding the island’s gardens and have an open air design to avoid the need for air conditioning.

Electricity:
Hot water is provided by double solar panels for each two cabins. Two new and very efficient generators have recently been installed to provide electricity for the entire island, which has greatly reduced fuel consumption. One has no outdoor lighting and gives customers battery-free torches as their guidance to the bar and restaurant at night. There are no air conditioning, refrigerator, tv, etc. installed in the rooms, in this way power consumption per chalet is kept to a minimum.

Conservation:
Bird Island has been a family business for over 35 years. It has always been run by ecological principles and has always pursued conservation programs for various aspects of its wildlife since the early 1970s. At present, one of the main projects is to monitor and protect the Sooty Terns (which is one of the many bird breeds found on the island) whom normally nest on the island in thousands between May – Sept.

Green and Hawksbill turtles, lay their eggs on the island. Volunteers normally come to Denis Island to help out with the turtle monitoring project during the Hawksbill season. They also work as tour guides and offer tours at least 4 times a week. Besides this, postgraduate students normally come to stay here for a week or more to complete different research programs. They are normally offered free accommodation in exchange of a final copy of their study.

Ecological sustainability:
The Bird island has its own farm, where as many fresh vegetables as possible are grown supplying the restaurant. Some of the vegetable grown here are spring onions, cucumbers, tomatoes, lettuce, pak choi, pumpkins, eggplants, chili, herbs, papaya and coconuts. Fish are caught daily by the island’s local fishermen. The kitchen has a composting system on site to minimize waste food. The island’s rainwater is collected and treated for drinking.

Community:
This hotel has had a policy for over 35 years to only hire local staff. Since this is an island destination, the employees live and work on the island. The offer staff courters as well as food. Staff with kids are able to stay here until the law regulates that they must be trained on the main island. One has a policy of allowing the older children to come to the island on weekends and holidays when there is available space on the aircrafts.

All staff are offered monetary loans if they want to build a house for themselves on the main island and there are no charge of any interest. The working population on the island serves as a small community and one has a very paternalistic approach to ensuring their welfare. They also actively involve their staff in the conservation projects, and the island’s conservation officer is responsible for educating new employees about their surroundings and the work they do on the island to preserve this habitat. The hotel’s nature tour also includes parts of cultural interest for guests – discussing medical use of island plants, international law, traditional methods of land management and fishing.
