ulrika baraza

Zanzibar is like Sir Richard Branson describes it, a “coconut-fringed beach of purest white and a sea as blue as cobalt”. Sunsets at Zanzibar is a mind blowing experience though Zanzibar has so much more to offer than only sunsets.

Stone Town is the old city and cultural heart of Zanzibar, little has changed over the last 200 years. There is a place for winding alleys, lively bazaars, mosques and big Arabs whose original owners competed with each other for the extravagance of their homes. You can spend many hours and days just wandering through these narrow streets and alleys, some people get lost once in a while, just to discover a new round corner.

Bwejuu Clinic
Through Baraza’s commitment to education and employment in the hospitality sector, as well as working with and supporting the local community, the Zanzibar collection is committed to support wherever support is needed. It is with great joy and pride that you have sponsored the dedicated maternity clinic in the village of Bwejuu, which this initiative hope will be of great benefit to the families within this community. The new maternity and children’s clinic in Bwejuu Zanzibar was officially opened on May 17, 2014 on behalf of Zanzibar Dr. Ali Mohamed Shein, chairman. One is happy that the occasion was marked by the presence of so many children, who will undoubtedly benefit from the services in this new clinic. Baraza is dedicated to make a difference in the local community and with its hotels as a platform that enables them to reach out and encourage other donors to contribute in a similar way. Through the charity organization New Hope, Sweden, Bwejuu now has a brand new children’s clinic. The Zanzibar Collection is very fond of working with New Hope and their generous support.

Environment:
Much effort has been put into building the hotel in an environmentally responsible manner.

– All villas have solar power

– There is a state-of-the-art waste management and recycling system

– An in-house garden that grows local produce.

– One has an environmentally responsible desalination plant where all water is produced locally and not taken from the village’s source.

– It is always a priority to buy materials or supplies from local villages, where possible and regularly receive visits from local fishermen who sell the day’s catch in their attempt to support the local community.

A decision was made when opening Baraza to support the local hotel school, which means that almost 90 percent of all staff at Baraza are graduates. They have undergone intensive training programs, English classes (from a professional English teacher) and have acquired a lifetime knowledge that will benefit them and the Zanzibar hospitality industry in general for a whole generation.

Baraza’s charity Baraza for Bwejuu (linked to sister hotels Breezes and Palms) has been responsible for a great improvement in the village’s quality of life. Since its inception, this charity has built a mosque, painted the Bwejuu clinic and supplied them with fresh water and medicines, donated beds and mattresses, clothes, school supplies and books.

Once a year, together with another charity program, the Baraza team visit the village where they do both village and beach clean ups. They repaint the clinic and celebrate one year of cooperation together with the community. The latest event was a Mchamvi vs Bwejuu football tournament. All together, 40 footballs were donated as well as a trophy for the winner. The winning team received 800,000 Tanzanian Shillings and the other team received 450,000. This money will be used to buy uniforms and help to provide constructive activities for the youth of these two villages.

Baraza’s guests consistently send gifts, donations and good materials for charity, which is a wonderful indicator of the program’s success and the importance of getting them to visit and experience life.
